Conference Workshops

  • #1 - Computer Vision & Image Classification

    Hosted by Spoor

Spoor uses computer vision and AI to detect, track, and classify birds in wind farms in order to help developers and operators gain insights and guide mitigation measures. In this workshop, Spoor will share more about computer vision and its applications. You will apply your newfound knowledge on a real data set to classify images using neural networks.

Lorea Coronado-Garcia has dedicated her career to environmental sustainability and has worked for international corporates and global organizations like Bloomberg New Energy Finance and United Nations Development Programme. She has a BS and BSE from the University of Michigan and an MSc from the University of Copenhagen in Forest and Nature Management.

Charlene Bruno has a masters in Computer Science with a specialization in Big Data and Analytics. She previously worked as a Data Scientist and consultant to clients in France.

  • #2 - AI and Ethics

Hosted by Tekna and WiDS Oslo

Are you curious about the ethical aspects of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning? In this workshop, WiDS Oslo and Tekna Big Data will guide you through ethical dilemmas such as bias, manipulation and how algorithms influence our daily lives. The workshop is discussion-based, alternating between group and plenary discussions, structured by themes presented by the organisers. There are no prerequisites apart from curiosity and an open mind, and everyone is welcome whether you are an AI expert or just curious.

The hosts are Heidi Dahl (Senior Research Scientist, Posten Norge), Ning Zhou (Principal Product Manager, Microsoft) and Diana Saplacan (Researcher, University of Oslo)

  • #3 - Ocean Health

Hosted by Cognite & HUB Ocean

In this workshop, participants will look at temperature change in ecologically important areas of the ocean (e.g. coral reefs). We will consider how these temperature changes affect the biodiversity in those regions and predict the impact over time. Time-series analysis (e.g. evaluating and predicting trends) will be at the core of this session.

Prerequisites: A laptop and working knowledge of pandas and plotting libraries is useful, but not required. A JupyterHub environment will be made available with Python and all of the necessary packages, so there is no need to have anything pre-installed.

The hosts are Maureen Byrne (Software engineer, Cognite), Emma Buøen (Software engineer, Cognite) and Tara Zeynep Baris (Senior Data Scientist, HUB Ocean)

  • #4 - Data & Technology

Hosted by BCG Gamma & BCG Platinion

How can companies tackle the societal challenges of our future? In this workshop, you will hear how the world of management consulting connects technology and social impact topics. Their data scientists and technical consultants will share two different cases they have been engaging in with the help of technology. One using data to measure, simulate and track climate impact, one to accelerate ERP systems in one of the world’s leading children’s aid organisations.

Olga Półchłopek is a Senior Data Scientist at BCG Gamma in Stockholm. Passionate about social impact, she spent the past year developing and implementing CO2 AI, a Machine Learning solution helping companies understand where their emissions come from and how to reduce them.

Anita Neubauer is a Manager at BCG Platinion, which focuses on IT and Digital strategy and implementation projects and transferred from the Munich to the Copenhagen office in 2021. After several international consulting and project management positions in the financial service industry, her clients at BCG are mostly in the industrial goods and healthcare industry.

Conference Speakers

  • Kimberly Mathisen, keynote

Kimberly Mathisen is the CEO of HUB Ocean, previously the CEO of Microsoft Norway.

Kimberly brings vast experience from a variety of industries and notable organisations including Microsoft and Yara International. As the leader of HUB Ocean, she works at the cutting edge of data, technology and collaboration, aiming to change the fate of the ocean through building the world’s most important data collaboration.

  • Machine Learning for Health

Machine Learning is no longer quite-so-new, and today we find Machine Learning models embedded in many technological aspects of our society, including in some high stakes decision making systems. Few things have higher personal stakes than when it comes to decisions related to medical treatment and interventions in health care. But in contrast to other industries, Machine Learning is in the early stages of adoption into the field of medicine and health care.

Hanne-Torill is a physicist and former research scientist, currently a data scientist at Fürst Medical Laboratory. Join her as she talks about the near-future potential of Machine Learning for Good Health and Well-being, and about some promising research projects where we are combining the expertise of medical practitioners, health data and Machine Learning technology.

  • Greener logistics with AI

The logistics and mobility sectors are responsible for the majority of Norway’s CO2 emissions. However, it is challenging to meet the urgent need for significant reductions in these sectors due to many and complex relations. Data driven machine learning methods may be crucial in this hunt for large-reductions initiatives.

Signe Riemer-Sørensen, PhD, is a researcher at SINTEF Digital. Her expertise is focused on the development of hybrid machine learning algorithms combining data driven methods and domain knowledge, for use in industrial settings, in particular within the domains of energy, construction and logistics.

  • Green is the new gold - How Yara increases production while optimizing energy consumption and emissions

Mineral fertilizers are the single largest lifesaving innovation, helping feed billions of people around the world. We will show how we can produce them with the most positive impact on society and the least negative impact on environment. We will also explore a more general trend of adding environmental point of view to production optimization in heavy industries - all of this from the practical perspective of a data scientist.

Agnieszka (Aga) Rackiewicz joined Yara in 2020 after completing a Master’s Degree in Mathematics in her native Poland, and working as an analyst and a Data Science Consultant, travelling globally to advise businesses in supply chain and manufacturing. Aga currently works on developing solutions optimizing production of fertilizers, ensuring high quality and low environmental impact of factory operations.

  • CAN supply chains be resilient and sustainable?

Each year, 220 billion aluminium cans are manufactured around the world. That’s nearly 28 cans per person. The production of each one of those cans involves a global supply chain that spans multiple continents and costs billions of dollars. But how are those supply chains managed today and how can we ensure that they remain resilient and sustainable when the world around us is in a constant state of flux? Join Sophie and Ida as they dissect the global supply chain behind this familiar product and explore the opportunities in this industry for intelligent data.

  • Responsible use of data science for a better welfare and labour system

There is a huge potential for use of data to achieve a more userfiendly, reliable and efficient labour and welfare administration, including more relevant and “fit for purpose” services and information to NAVs users and collaborators and optimized processes, which in turn will contribute to sustainability goals as decent work, good health and reduction of poverty. However, there is a risk of working against other sustainability goals such as equality and justice if the introduction of AI and other types of technology is not done in a responsible manner. In this talk, Cathrine will explain how NAV works to ensure responsible use of data science.

  • Why you cannot do real impactful sustainability work without good data

How can you use data to make your organization more sustainable? Data driven decision making is key for effective sustainability initiatives, and we at Oda would love to share how we are using data for improving our impact on people and planet! We will give an introduction to how we use data in strategic decision making, experimentation and nudging - the impactful approach to creating the right change.
